DIAGNOSED ADHD
Sarah is a fully qualified counsellor working with children, young people and adults. She has had a passion for counselling since as a youngster she had counselling herself and saw the huge difference it made to her. She for ever since wanted to be able to help people in the same way as she knows how life transforming counselling can be.
As a child Sarah had absolutely no idea she had undiagnosed ADHD so faced difficulties at school and home with many describing her as ‘difficult’ and ‘disruptive’. Later Sarah was even permanently excluded from secondary school and placed in Temporary Care via the local authority.
During this difficult time, Sarah began experimenting with recreational drugs and alcohol and her life took a very downward spiral. At some points, even social services and the police were involved due to her ‘disruptive behaviour.’ Yes still with all these obvious clues nobody joined the dots and realised that she might have ADHD.
Sarah had always felt different throughout school and never really felt as though she belonged. Friendships were often fleeting as were any interest and hobbies! The only ones that stuck were ones that would be viewed as dangerous or not good for her.
But then came the transformation. Having counselling with someone who understood ADHD really was a huge turning point for Sarah and she felt as though she could at last understand herself and could begin to put her life back together.
Sarah’s first counsellor later recounted their first meeting with Sarah refusing treatment for her diabetes, swearing at him saying ‘Do I look like I need counselling’. The honest answer was yes she did! He walked away saying “I’m here when you need me” and taking him up on the offer was the best decision she made.
After finishing her own counselling aged 19 Sarah went back into education working with SEND and so began her own dream of becoming a counsellor and supporting others who may be facing the same lack of understanding and unconditional support she had faced.
Since then her passion and interests have expanded into so many more areas of counselling. Sarah now works with various organisations to support those who are struggling within schools and local pupil referral units – supporting those who have been let down and are considered hard to reach.
As an adult Sarah’s life is so much more fulfilled, despite dealing with ADHD on an everyday basis, meaning losing numerous bank cards, regularly losing her car in the car park and quite often choosing to go chill in the jacuzzi at the gym rather than actually exercise!
But ultimately she believes her happiness comes from understanding herself at last, self-compassion and being able to be her true self.
It often shocks people from Sarah’s past when they see how far she has progressed but without her ADHD wouldn’t have had the determination and drive to push through, and make something of her life.
Sarah’s counselling style is working in an integrative way as she firmly believes that no two people are the same so this needs a personalised and tailored approach. She can utilise various approaches and techniques to give clients a completely safe and nonjudgemental environment in which to explore their past or current issues.
Sarah has worked within the school system and has eight years working with Educational Health and Care Plans and SEND. She also has counselled for MIND, Place2be and National Citizens Service and has experience of pre-assessing for both Autism and ADHD. Sarah also runs mindfulness workshops for children in the Durham Area.
Sarah has both professional and personal experience with neurodivergence, ADHD, Autism, LGBTQ+, chronic illness and childhood trauma with inner child work but works with all other presenting issues including anxiety, depression, parenting, infertility, self-harm and stress.
