DIAGNOSED ADHD & DYSLEXIA & DAUGHTER DIAGNOSED ADHD
LOCATION ~ PL31

Maggie had always had difficulty with textures and sensory issues as a small child. She was then diagnosed with ADHD at the age of five. She was subsequently diagnosed with dyslexia and ARFID – an eating disorder.

Maggie remembers her childhood being difficult particularly because of her dyslexia. She often felt left out at school, ridiculed for not being able to understand things straight away and very much that she ‘just wasn’t good enough’.

Although she remembers excelling in art and being very creative, the lack of understanding around dyslexia left her feeling totally inadequate.

Maggie was regularly told off for being disruptive and distracting others in class. Mostly this was because she was reading out aloud as it was too difficult to stay on track reading in her head. This lack of understanding and the constant put downs by adults  led to her having low self esteem and little confidence.

Having known she had ADHD since the age of five, Maggie knows exactly what it’s like growing up with the condition and how it feels to be labelled as ‘the naughty child’.
She remembers being very easily distracted and highly emotional. She often felt lonely as a child and didn’t feel she ever had any ‘proper friends’.

Maggie decided at the age of nine it was about time she tried to smoke as both her parents did! She became adept at stealing cigarettes from her parents and this grew into quite an addiction especially during her teenage years. Luckily when Maggie became pregnant at the age of 20 she gave up smoking but she is acutely aware of how difficult it is to give up something that has become such a habit.

Maggie did however discover a love of music and was particularly good at the cornet and trumpet. She was even offered a scholarship at a prestigious music school but her ADHD anxiety stopped her from taking this up. She went through a period in her teens of taking laxatives  She now recognises this was a cry for help, she just wanted someone to listen.

Maggie thought of her ADHD as ‘a hidden disorder’. She often had problems focusing and she would find herself daydreaming with an inability to focus in classes. She remembers being easily distracted, hyperactive with poor organisational skills and very   impulsive tendencies. This would lead to periods of anxiety growing up and she didn’t have anyone to share these feelings with.

As an adult Maggie worked as a Teaching Assistant for many years in a mainstream high school helping children with ADHD, autism and Tourette’s.

As her own children were growing up, Maggie and her husband fostered children and young people often with complex needs. She found this hugely satisfying. Maggie gained lots of further experience and understanding of different addictions and various presentations of ADHD. She also enjoyed supporting the families of the children she was fostering, many of whom had addiction as the root cause of their chaotic living.

Maggie’s own daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD, Tourette’s, hypersensitivity, hyper vigilance and ARFID so she is very used to helping teenagers struggling with these issues.
More recently she has been working with a local charity where most of her clients are struggling with addictions including drugs, alcohol and promiscuity. She also worked with several clients who were prolific self-harmers and gained much experience of working with these clients.

Maggie is passionate about supporting clients. She does not believe in the ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy. She believes in working with each client to get to the very bottom of who they are, how they fit into the world and what they want their life to look like.

Maggie is vastly experienced at working with ADHD, ASD, addiction and eating disorders. She works with children, adolescents and parents and also enjoys supporting family members impacted by any of these issues.

Maggie wanted to help ADHD clients more, so she decided to gain further knowledge in other areas; this led her to study Eating Nutrition Through Psychology, learning about the power of our bodies and mind and gaining an in-depth insight into the process of digestion, circulation and elimination and how these processes affect our health.

She also learnt the damaging effects of mindless eating, leading her to adopt intuitive eating and understand the importance of mindful eating and the relationship between meditation and healthy eating habits.

Maggie lives by three main principles in her life and she loves sharing how successful these can be with her clients. Whilst meditation as a stand-alone relaxation has power behind it, she could also see benefits in the happiness eating methods. So for her – Meditation, Happiness & Eating, Work.

Crystals are another love of Maggie’s life. Crystals are a naturally occurring inorganic substance with specific crystal structures, they also have vibrations that resonate at different frequencies depending on their unique geometric structure. Maggie finds it fascinating how the connection to different earth energies and lattice patterns work and she learnt through study that crystals have the same principles as people – each person vibrates at different frequencies too, based on our energetic structures. This is what drew Maggie to train as a Crystal healer, to broaden the support she can offer to her clients for those who are interested in this kind of healing process.
