DIAGNOSED ADHD

Cole was diagnosed with ADHD while studying Psychology at University.  From watching social media he began to realise a lot of what he thought was quite normal were actually ADHD symptoms and for the first time started to question if he may have ADHD.  When trying to understand his own behaviour and linking it to potential ADHD, a lot of things suddenly seemed to make sense!

He had been missed as a child thanks to performing well in core school subjects and well enough in others.  He was written off as ‘chatty’ and ‘disruptive’ instead of noticed as potentially ADHD.  By A-levels he had learned to coast well, without much need for revision but he realised he needed to learn pretty swiftly how to take in and retain information if he was going to succeed at university.

Cole began to take this seriously after missing a lecture because he showed up late, which irony of ironies turned out to be on ADHD!  After the lecture four people separately messaged him saying that the lecture reminded them of him!  Cole then actively sought a diagnosis and once diagnosed it became apparent that both his parents have ADHD, and his younger brother most likely did too.

Growing up in a family of undiagnosed ADHD came with a large amount of chaos, unregulated emotion and other dramatic events such as divorce, a financial crisis and the global pandemic didn’t help.  Cole, like both his parents before him, went through an abnormally large amount of psychological trauma.

From this an interest in learning about, training in and helping people with both ADHD symptoms and psychological trauma was born.  Cole spent a year working with a coaching company that helps people with business, trauma, purpose and drive and shaping their life into what they want it to be.  A large number of the people drawn to work with this company were also neurodiverse.  Cole became an accredited coach while working with this company and is currently in the process of taking further qualifications.

Cole shadowed coaches for the best part of a year and during his qualification gained experience working with both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals, as well as working with complex trauma.

During this time Cole completed his degree in Psychology focussing on sensory processing, decision making, emotional science and cognitive function.

He found these topics to pair well with coaching ADHD clients being able to blend modern research with coaching techniques to help clients create strategies to fit their unique needs.

Cole’s main focus in coaching is helping clients help themselves both with common solutions to common problems and by tailoring solutions to individuals.  The problem a person faces and their emotions are worked with to try and create a comfortable and effective solution that works specifically for that client.

His clients have described him as a ‘friendly, intuitive and down to earth coach’, ‘practical’, ‘helpful’ and ‘accepting’.  Clients have called him ‘insightful’ and ‘perceptive’ as well as ‘empathetic’ and ‘emotionally intelligent’ with an ability to help ground and frame their perspectives that make stressful situations easier to handle.

Cole is passionate about both teaching ways for clients to better manage their ADHD symptoms as well as their emotions, while improving their ability to care for themselves in the process.

Part of Cole’s approach involves learning to accept emotions like overwhelm and frustration to reduce shame around these feelings and make them easier to accept and manage.  He believes this is something key for ADHD clients who can often struggle more severely with feelings of failure, guilt, regret and shame especially once diagnosed.
