DIAGNOSED COMBINED ADHD

LOCATION ~ OX18

Emma is a fully qualified and accredited counsellor. She was diagnosed in 2021 with combined ADHD, after a lifetime of feeling different, not fitting in and being treated for anxiety and depression.

Emma found school boring, particularly subjects that didn’t interest her, like maths and PE! She found herself truanting a lot, smoking and drinking alcohol in an attempt to fit in and to feel like she belonged somewhere.

Emma’s journey to her ADHD diagnosis aged 31, came about when looking at ways to support her son. When researching what her son was struggling with, she recognised a lot of issues that clicked with her own past and led to her seeking her own assessment. It also made sense as to why none of the anti-depressant medications had ever made much difference to how she was feeling.

Emma has supported many clients diagnosed with ADHD. She has also worked with many wondering if they have the condition and those going through the assessment and diagnostic process.

One of Emma’s biggest struggles throughout life has been with her poor short term memory and organisational skills. She’s had to work incredibly hard to put structures into place to help with this. She very much enjoys sharing the ideas and coping mechanisms she has in place that have been helpful to see if they too could work with her clients. And collaboratively exploring new ones that will work for them specifically.

Emma feels that one of the best things a counsellor can offer is a place to be truly heard and validated. After a lifetime of not being heard or validated, this is something she is keen to give back to clients.

Emma believes that self-compassion is the foundation of all self-esteem, especially for people diagnosed with ADHD. From personal experience, she knows how easy it is to be overly critical of yourself when facing challenges like distraction, procrastination or struggling to meet expectations.

Treating yourself with kindness—creates the space for growth and resilience. It’s not about being perfect, but about acknowledging that setbacks are part of the journey. Learning to show yourself the same compassion you’d offer a friend can be transformative, fostering the self-esteem needed to overcome obstacles and thrive.

Emma is passionate about clients learning to be compassionate to themselves. Many, like her, have often grown up with a very negative inner voice. Often this can be from school where ADHD children are too often told “you’ll never amount to anything” and “if only you just made an effort you’d achieve so much more”.

Emma loves to help people replace those negative and critical voices with more compassionate ones.

As someone with personal experience navigating the challenges of ADHD, Emma is deeply passionate about helping young people aged 16 plus who face similar struggles. She understands firsthand the difficulties of staying focused, managing time and balancing emotions, especially during such a pivotal stage of life.

For many, ADHD can make school, work, and social situations feel overwhelming, leading to feelings of frustration and self-doubt. Emma’s own journey has given her the insight and empathy to support and guide young people, helping them find effective strategies to thrive and build confidence in their abilities, despite the obstacles they face.

Emma provides walk-and-talk therapy throughout West Oxfordshire, offering sessions in scenic locations like country parks and woodlands. This approach can be especially helpful for those who find traditional, face-to-face therapy settings a bit intense. Being outdoors and physically moving while talking can help ease the process of reflection and discussion.

Miscarriage, baby loss and infertility is a topic very close to Emma’s heart as she’s seen and experienced first hand the devastation and heartbreak it brings with it. She is more than keen to help others going through the same.

Emma is passionate about supporting all clients whether they are just thinking about the possibility of having ADHD, going through the assessment and diagnosis process or coming to terms with having the condition following a diagnosis.
