DIAGNOSED COMBINED ADHD

LOCATION ~ CV47

Thomas was diagnosed with ADHD when he was just 6 years old, in the 1990’s.  At that time the stigma was rife.  Most people hadn’t even heard of ADHD and the ones that had just thought it was ‘naughty behaviour’ and ‘fidgety boys’.  It was only when Thomas’ mother read a small article in a newspaper about ADHD, that she could start to understand her son and set about trying to help him with the condition.

Thomas struggled in primary school, he felt alone and isolated.  Making friends and fitting in was a struggle.  Home life was just as much of a challenge as school.  He felt alienated from his siblings and that he was treated differently.  Thomas felt that his family lost patience with him quickly and try as hard as he did, he just wasn’t like the others.

By the end of year seven, Thomas was on his way to a school for ’emotional & behaviour difficulties’.  This move wasn’t great for him, but due to lack of resources, knowledge and understanding it was the only option.  Thomas knew he wasn’t the same as others and that really became apparent as he got older.

He then left school at 16 with no GCSEs.  This was hugely frustrating because Thomas and his teachers knew he had the ability but not being able to stay focused wrecked his chances.  He had no real guidance or general understanding of what was happening to him as a neuro diverse teenager.

Thomas’ teenage years were his ‘destructive years’.  Looking back at this time he lacked hope, structure, self-belief and guidance on how to utilise and manage his ADHD traits.

That combo created plenty of paths that were wrong for him! Including numerous wrong jobs that he would give up after only a couple months or even weeks; jumping from new idea to new idea and being very impulsive.

Thomas was seeking something he could pour his heart and energy into and a role that would embrace his ADHD traits, but he just had no idea where to begin or what career would best suit him.

Classically for young ADHD people like Thomas – to find the adrenaline his brain was seeking he turned to just about every self sabotaging behaviour there was including alcohol, petty crime, drugs, promiscuous behaviour and over eating.

His early 20’s became more challenging, realising that he couldn’t live like he was as a teen, but also realising he was developing mental health issues due to how he was living his life.  Insecurity came and he felt like a failure taking the only jobs he could get including security and being a doorman.

Thomas struggled in romantic relationships especially with the responsibilities they brought.  His mental health rapidly deteriorated in his mid 20’s.  Thomas felt forever misunderstood, which led to further frustration and a huge sense of loneliness.

A new diagnosis of BPD/EUPD frustrated him and he first came to Headstuff for clarification that he was actually ADHD and the traits had followed him into adulthood.

Once he had this confirmed he started to become more self-aware and understand the effects of his childhood ADHD and traumas.  He started to study psychology and neurological disorders in his spare time.  Thomas started to search for what he would need to do to channel his energy and passion into a career, something he would be good at and something he could really be proud of.

Nearly 10 years down the line, Thomas owns his home in the countryside and has a beautiful but crazy family and a supportive fiancé.  He is obsessed with understanding himself, ADHD, psychology and the mind, combining both his experiences and his thirst for knowledge and understanding.

Thomas knew he needed to help ADHD teens who like him were lost, kicking off, needed help to understand exactly who they are, what their strengths are and where they want to go in life.

Thomas’ acute understanding of being a troubled teen and young adult helps his clients to “trust the process” more easily as they aren’t talking to someone who hadn’t just studied the condition and the brain – but someone who has lived with it and is still living it.

Thomas works alongside his clients, focusing on identifying their goals, building inner confidence and self belief.  Thomas has a deep understanding of their behaviours and will prepare them for their chosen future with coping mechanisms, strategies and the ability to have confidence in who they are.

Having finally found his niche, Thomas has started to achieve qualifications in counselling, psychology and coaching to enable him to eventually become an accredited coach.  Thomas is extremely passionate about helping others not feel so alone and misunderstood like he did. He relates incredibly well to teenagers because he understands their frustrations, irritations, feeling misunderstood and lacking focus and direction.

He is down to earth with a great sense of humour which always goes down well in Therapy sessions.  He is ADHD knowledgeable, has tons of enthusiasm and thrives helping others optimise their strengths.

For teens who have gone off the rails, got in trouble with the Police, who are dealing with addictions or simply feeling fed up and not liking their life, Thomas will do his absolute best to help them get on the right path and use their ADHD to succeed in life.
