DIAGNOSED COMBINED ADHD
Zoe was diagnosed with ADHD when she was eleven years old. Sadly her teachers could only see the diagnosis. They lacked the knowledge and understanding required to support someone with an ADHD diagnosis. Zoe was labelled ‘trouble’ ‘ and described by professionals then as ‘problematic’.
However thankfully Zoe was supported by a Learning Mentor at school who did understand Zoe’s differences. The Learning Mentor would advocate for Zoe when teachers and other professionals found her ‘problematic’!
With the support of her Learning Mentor, Zoe completed her secondary education, despite many assuming that she would be permanently excluded from school. She managed to defy the odds and proved the professionals wrong. She was determined.
Having someone who believed in her, motivated Zoe into working towards her own dream – which was to become a counsellor. She was eventually able to identify her own strengths, rather than focusing on what she couldn’t do, and embraced them. She had a strong desire to understand and accept people. To understand what life had been like for them – something that had been so lacking when she was younger. And to motivate them to follow their dreams. Despite whatever conditions they were dealing with.
Zoe went on to work with young people with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. She was able to support them with the struggles they were experiencing by looking at what each child needed – implementing coping strategies and emotional support for them as individuals. Rather than assuming they were all the same and needed the same kind of help.
She was able to integrate children and adolescents back into mainstream schools and to help them build on the foundations they needed to access education.
The journey to achieving her counselling qualifications was a challenging one. Zoe however was determined to help other people so pushed herself to expand her knowledge and skills. This experience helped Zoe to become a passionate therapist and hugely expanded her empathy and level of understanding.
All of her experience to date and knowledge gained means Zoe is now an experienced therapist who is eager to help others understand their differences and needs. She is passionate about helping others overcome the barriers that may be holding them back from achieving their goals and help to break down the stigmas attached to mental health.
Zoe is now a fully qualified counsellor. She has a level 4 Diploma in Counselling. Zoe works with an integrative style, meaning she will use various styles of counselling to best meet the needs of her clients.
She believes that mental health although invisible at times is just as debilitating as any physical disability. But also knows with the right therapeutic input and support – anything is possible.
